Form for Life : Jacqueline Cohen

In the quest for personal and professional growth, it is essential to cultivate a strong foundation of character traits that will guide us towards success. The Form for Life coaching model, comprising Discipline, Integrity, Self-awareness, Curiosity and

Open-mindedness offers a comprehensive roadmap for achieving excellence in all aspects of life. I developed this model over the last decade while working with hundreds of clients.

Discipline is the cornerstone of success in any endeavor. It involves setting clear goals, creating a plan of action, and consistently adhering to it. By practicing self-discipline, individuals can overcome obstacles, stay focused on their objectives, and ultimately achieve their desired outcomes. In business, discipline is crucial for meeting deadlines, managing projects efficiently, and maintaining a high level of productivity. In relationships, it fosters reliability, trustworthiness, and accountability, strengthening bonds and fostering mutual respect. We all know too well that we live in a world that offers millions of distractions and sexy alternatives to doing what we are responsible for. Being disciplined to what we respond and react to, keeps us on our path. I have developed practices around consistency for holding ourselves to a course of action that honors our commitments and purpose. Many of these practices will rub up against your survival mechanisms and deeply ingrained habits.

Integrity is another key trait that underpins success in life, business, and relationships. It encompasses honesty, transparency, and a strong moral compass. It’s when you commit to being your word. Individuals who operate with integrity earn the trust and respect of others, creating a solid foundation for lasting relationships and business partnerships. Integrity is essential for building a reputation of reliability and credibility, which are invaluable assets in today's competitive landscape.

Self-awareness plays a vital role in personal growth and development. By understanding our strengths, weaknesses, values, and emotions, we can make informed decisions, set realistic goals, and navigate challenges effectively. Self-aware individuals are better equipped to manage stress, communicate effectively, and build strong relationships based on empathy and understanding. In business, self-awareness enables leaders to recognize their impact on others, adapt to changing circumstances, and cultivate a culture of inclusivity and collaboration. When we decide to make open and honest assessments of our own strengths and weaknesses, we are more likely to ask for guidance. We set the right example and realize a higher level of potential in ourselves and others that we may never have seen before.

Curiosity is a powerful catalyst for learning, innovation, and growth. It drives us to explore new ideas, ask questions, and seek out opportunities for personal and professional development. Curious individuals are open to new experiences, perspectives, and possibilities, expanding their knowledge and creativity. In business, curiosity fuels creativity, problem-solving, and strategic thinking, driving innovation and driving competitive advantage. In relationships, curiosity fosters understanding, empathy, and connection, strengthening bonds and deepening communication. Endless Curiosity is your superpower!

Open-mindedness is truly essential for embracing diversity, change, and new ideas. It involves being receptive to different perspectives, willing to challenge assumptions, and open to learning from others. Open-minded individuals are adaptable, flexible, and resilient, able to navigate complexity and uncertainty with grace and agility. The leaders I see with an extraordinary level of grace have the ability to change the world for the better.

Thinking FAST … Thinking SLOW

Recognizing biases: Kahneman's critically acclaimed book emphasizes the importance of being aware of cognitive biases that can affect decision-making. Coaches can use this knowledge to help clients recognize and overcome biases that may be hindering their progress. For example, a client may have a tendency to focus on negative feedback and discount positive feedback, leading to a skewed perception of their abilities. By helping the client become aware of this bias, the coach can guide them towards a more balanced and accurate self-assessment.

2. Utilizing System 1 and System 2 thinking: Kahneman describes two modes of thinking, with System 1 being fast, intuitive, and automatic, and System 2 being slower, deliberate, and analytical. I try and help my clients leverage both systems in their decision-making processes. For example, if a client is faced with a challenging decision regarding their company they may initially react with a gut instinct (System 1), but encouraging them to take a step back and engage in more thoughtful analysis (System 2) before making a final decision.

3. Framing and mental accounting: Kahneman discusses how the way information is presented can influence decision-making. Coaches can use this concept to help clients reframe their thoughts and perspectives in a more positive and constructive manner. For instance, instead of viewing setbacks as failures, the coach can help the client see them as opportunities for growth and learning.

4. Anchoring and adjustment: Kahneman explains how initial information (anchors) can influence subsequent judgments. Coaches can help clients recognize when they are being influenced by irrelevant anchors and guide them towards making more informed decisions. For example, a client may be fixated on a specific goal that is no longer relevant, and the coach can help them adjust their focus and set more realistic and achievable goals.

Coaching provides a perspective that is driven by possibility and opportunity. The lens a coach offers is clearsighted because there is no personal agenda. The Coach is in service of their client, their partner and their highest self.

Overall, by incorporating the principles outlined in Kahneman's book, coaches can enhance their coaching strategies and help clients make more effective decisions, achieve their goals, and improve their overall well-being.
